Well, there's no guarantee that the device supports SNMP. Try using "snmpwalk" from the command line:

snmpwalk -c public -v 1 hostname

"public" is the most common read-only "community string", and all devices that support SNMP should support version 1. You can try version 2c to check, though.

If it supports SNMP, you should get a crapload of output.

Personally, I use Cacti for this type of thing. Might be too user-unfriendly for what you're looking for, though.
