Does anyone know of a reason why you couldn't use Car audio components (ala subs), get a dedicated amp, and build a box for the home?

I've known people to do that sort of thing. It works, it's just more of a hassle than simply buying a proper self-powered home subwoofer.

Really, the tough part is the 12-volt power supply. You need something very beefy to drive a car subwoofer amp. A little Radio Shack wall-wart isn't going to cut it.
