Why do you say this? Is it because you don't think that the average power gives a good measure of the subjective "volume level"?

Yeah, that's what I meant. I'm sure that such algorithms have been written before, although I haven't yet tried poking around on the 'net to find anything in this vein. I'd be curious to see if anyone has written up any definitive white papers on the subject.
