I think it is because it is playing all 20 audio streams simultaneously in real time using Windows Media Player. It doesn't speed up or slow down the streaming based on available system resources, and the transcoding is also done in real time.

The main screen of the program warns you not to try and run other applications while Tunebite is running, and I can confirm from experience that they are not kidding.
