Was the screen an LCD or CRT? The "negative" lag might have been LCD rendering lag. It's usually small enough that most people never even notice these days, but shows very clearly with a CRT and LCD rendering the same image and a high speed camera. Some graphics programmers like to go to extremes when measuring this
