My oldest WRT54G actually never needs this, it's been on for years. It's all the newer than V1 that occasionally fail.

How much newer? If you're talking WRT54G and not GL, I'd assume it's because they cheaped out on the later models. Get the WRT54GL and you'll have fewer problems. I still install those things all the time and they work great.
