Beats me. I have no idea of whether or why it is that way or if it is a good or bad idea. Possibly Mark had me do it that way, maybe something to do with the second "repeater" router.

If I do the telnet thing with the PC connected directly to the cable modem, bypassing the router, then it works just the way you describe.

Interestingly (although probably not relevant to the discussion), if at a command prompt I ping 209.85.148.113, it pings Google successfully, but the ping times are more than twice as long as pinging Google.com.

It really seems like I can't open port 80 on the router. (I say that just as if I had the faintest idea what I was talking about. smile )
